The story of a bunch of misfits whose misconception about each others backgrounds end up in a series of chaotic, yet comic outcomes. Aftab Shivdasani (Nandu) and Rimi Sen (Anjali) play two strangers who have to pretend that are a married couple in order to get a place to live. Paresh Rawal (Radheysham Tiwari) plays a rich, yet ground to earth businessman whose business is named after his wife (Shoma Anand) Anjali. Akshaye Khanna (Jeetu) plays a young man starting a new business in electronic ware. Things get complicated when Rimi Sen goes to Paresh Rawal's house in search of a job & meets Akshaye Khanna who falls in love with her thinking she is Paresh Rawal's daughter. Paresh Rawal's wife thinks that he is having an affair with Rimi Sen & while Paresh Rawal thinks his wife is having an affair with Akshaye Khanna due to Rimi Sen and her having the same name. Then comes in Shakti Kapoor (Tejabhai alias Kachara Seth) whose daughter falls in love with a guy pretending to be Paresh Rawal's son and soon everything gets out of control.

Amarkanth Varma (Shahrukh Khan) is employed with All India Radio as a reporter who is dispatched to cover festivities in the northeastern part of India. While waiting for a train at a remote and isolated railway station, he comes across an attractive young woman who refuses to help him. Both meet again, and this time she asks him to leave her alone because she says that she is married. Thereafter, her relatives severely beat up Amarkanth. He finds out during the beating that, in fact, she is unmarried. On his recovery he is unable to get her out of his mind. They meet again, and this time she identifies herself as his wife, even tells him to call her Meghna (Manisha Koirala), and both become fairly intimate on a bus journey. Then the next day she vanishes. His search for her is in vain. Heartbroken and under pressure from his family, he agrees to marry a woman named Preeti Nair (Preity Zinta). On the day of his engagement to Preeti, Meghna shows up at his house and asks him to let her and a friend stay there for a few days. Amarkanth's family readily agrees, not knowing that this time Meghna has come with a private and deadly agenda of her own that will shake the very roots of the Varma family and India as a whole.

Angar Chand (Amrish Puri) lives a wealthy lifestyle in a small town in India. Fiery Angar Chand and his family of four sons Balram (Jackie Shroff), Shakti (Arbaaz Khan), Kishan (Paresh Rawal) and Jai (Akshaye Khanna) have taken a vow to stay away from women owing to a past family tragedy.Mere mention of the opposite sex is 'strictly forbidden' in their family. Lakshmidevi (Lakshmi) is waiting for an opportunity to seek revenge on Angar Chand and his family. As luck would have it, Angar Chand's youngest son, Jai, and Lakshmidevi's grand-daughter, Anjali (Kareena Kapoor), land up in the same college. Then starts the game of deceit. Both Jai and Anjali pretend to fall in love with each other to seek revenge for their respective families. But somewhere down the line, all this play becomes serious and the two actually begin to develop true feelings for each other. In order to get wed, Jai must first convince his elder brothers to get married albeit in vain as none of them even want to consider this option. Then Lucky (Arshad Warsi), Jai's friend, finds out that Kishan. a seemingly celibate Bhagwan Hanuman's devotee, is leading a dual life as Murari, who has been married to a woman, Gopi (Farah), from Gangapur, for 7 years and has two children, a son and a daughter. When Angar Chand finds out he kicks Kishan and Jai out of his house. Watch what happens when Anjali's marriage is finalized with Laxmi's advocate's son (Manoj Joshi), while Kashinath (Shakti Kapoor) and Surajbhan (Akhilendra Mishra) approach Angar Chand to help them stop Jai from disrupting this marriage on one hand, while Laxmi tells Jai to marry Anjali - setting off a deadly confrontations between the estranged sons and father.
